The Foundation established The Waspam Library in 2012. Waspam is largely undeveloped, and lacks many modern conveniences. Running water and electricity are non-existed in many homes and poverty is abundant. The village is located in the North Caribbean Coastal Autonomous Region of Nicaragua and is the principle port and gateway to the surrounding indigenous Miskito villages. There is no other free library in the region.
The library offers over 1,500 Spanish language books of fiction, geography, history, and science, as well as encyclopedia sets relevant to the Central American culture. All the books have been sorted and labeled according to category and reading level and have their own designated place on the library shelves. The library has also been fully furnished with tables, chairs and bookcases, all built by a local carpenter.
It is our hope that with access to books, children will grow to love reading, exploring, and learning; which in turn will open up possibilities to greater success in their future.
